Hairstyling and the Age Old Use of Wax

Hairstyling and the Age Old Use of Wax

Fancy imitating Asterix the Gaul and his mate Obelix in terms of fashion? what?… having second thoughts? It is said that the way one styles his (or her) hair says a lot about their sense of fashion and personality… and I have to admit Asterix the Gaul is not your average George Clooney or David Beckham. Yet the Gauls did have a fashion secret thanks to which at least in terms of hairstyles they squarely beat the Romans without needing any potions – hair wax!

Yes, men have been styling their hair from time immemorial. Wax is known to have been used as the main ingredient for male hairstyling for the last two-thousand years, thanks mainly to the Gauls who are credited with its first use. Over the years it lost some popularity due to increased competition from alternative products such as hair mousse, hair gel or hairspray, but has in recent years experienced an increase in popularity.

Wax is a versatile product that can be used successfully with a variety of hairstyles – from a roguish look to a relaxed bed-head style. In contrast with hair gels, most of which contain alcohol among their ingredients, hair wax is flexible and pliable and has less chance of drying out. This allows one to reshape or restyle one’s hair during the day. Also, wax, unlike gels, does not get your hands sticky! There are a variety of products which can be grouped under the generic name of hair wax, such as pomade utty, glue, whip, molding gum, or styling paste. As one can imagine, consistency, textures, and indicated uses of such products varies.

MeninMalta offers a variety of Mr Natty ‘wax’ hair preparation products. These range from Mr Natty Dub Hair Preparation – a dry matt, sharp, medium mold pomade wax which add texture to the hair and provides it with a slick and tidy look yet does not feel heavy upon your hair. Mr Natty’s Pomade Wax Hair Preparation gives the hair a low key shine (not blinding) and a strong, enduring sharp looking hold and a subtle and delicate Parma Violets smell. Mr Natty Paste Hair Preparation is a Water and Oil based wax that provides that silky finish and a medium to strong hold with a fruity scent. Finally, Mr Natty’s Clay Hair Preparation provides a slightly heavier texture than a pomade, adds volume and thickness to one’s hair and gives strands a faint coconut scent.

One last comment… yes I did mean Asterix the Gaul and not Danny of Grease’s fame, though yes wax did give that film its greasy name. And for the sake of making things clear, no… wax was not part of the potion which Getafix fed the Romans to make their hair and beard grow… Yet if you use MeninMalta’s Mr Natty’s waxes you might be needing Getafix around… to make you a potion to give you a break from the fairer sex!
